Corporate Responsibility

Corporate Responsibility (“CR”) plays an important part of our business in promoting values of a caring society and encouraging the practice of giving back to our employees, community and environment.

With this in mind, CR is something that we have always been practicing, not because we are bound by rules and regulations of Bursa Malaysia, but because it is something we want to voluntarily undertake to do.

Our CR effort covers the following dimensions:-

Workplace

We believe that CR should start from within the organization where employees’ health and safety, should be given utmost priority. Our Group HSE committee has implemented various programmes during the year to inculcate safety and health awareness among employees. Fire drills, building evacuation exercises,  random drug  tests at worksites and health and safety talks are amongst some of the  CR initiatives undertaken by the Group. Our subsidiary company, SDWS has again maintained a ZERO LTI (Lost Time Incident) in 2008 for rig operation.

Our human resources development emphasizes on building self-confidence, leadership skills, unity and competence at workplace. Induction programme is conducted for all new recruits and periodical HR dialogue sessions are conducted for employees to promote open dialogue with  our management in order for them to have a better understanding of the Group’s developments, goals and strategies. In addition, we carry out various training and development programmes for our employees’ based on their needs and requirements to ensure that they are well equipped with the necessary skills for their jobs. Our employees, their spouse and children (where possible) are covered by our Group Hospitality and Surgery Insurance Scheme and outpatient medical benefits.. Our employees are also further covered by the Group Personal Accident and Term life Insurance.

Community

We remain committed in giving our helping hand to those in need whenever given the opportunity. The theme has been that “AT SAAG WE REACH OUT”. We have launched a programme called “ Books For Hope” wherein we collect books and send it to Indonesia to set up libraries for children in rural areas. Some of the othet CR initiatives undertaken are we visit and make contributions in kind and cash
to children’s home, orphanages, old folks home, disaster relief centres and schools. We also provide industrial training for under graduates and work-study training to under-graduate student interns.

On the international front, GTS, our associate company in Cambodia has also created jobs opportunities for the people in Kg Cham. Also wherever possible, GTS makes local procurement toward supporting local businesses.

Market Place

We are driven, .. or we strive to find ways and means to improve the quality of our products and services of our various business units. Our main operating divisions of the Group have obtained the ISO 9001:2008 certification. We have always taken it upon ourselves to accept accountability for our actions by continuously evaluating and monitoring our projects’ processes and systems and strive to achieve a delivery system of the highest standard and quality.

The construction of telecommunication towers by our subsidiary companies bring positive impact to the lives of the rural citizens with the availability of telecommunication services.
Prefabrication technique used over conventional brick laying for construction of houses reduce cost and speed up work. Other CR initiatives undertaken by the Group include investment in smaller and medium growth companies which have growth potential, regular supplier assessments and timely reporting policy to the shareholders and public at large.

Environment

We are fully aware of the importance of the prudent management of natural resources. To this end, several best practices have been implemented to conserve and protect the environment. We have introduced proper handling and disposal of waste at Kemaman Supply Base and ensured that any schedule waste produced is to be disposed through the DOE’s authorized vendor. In addition sludge waste from our power plant is recycled and disposed off to a vendor who uses it to make road asphalt.

Other CR initiatives undertaken include creating green living for all development project undertaken ie tree planting and landscaping, recycling of empty toner cartridges, usage of recycle paper at our offices and strict compliance to “No Open Burning“ policy and to ensure all relevant environmental laws and other requirements are adhered to. We have also continued in implementing a recycling campaign in our head office whereby all consumable items that can be re-used and recycled are collected and sent to a social welfare organization for charity purposes. We will continue to effectively engage in new technologies that are environmentally friendly and adhere to all regulations covering air, waste, water and energy consumption.
